At Ability8, we built our app to help anyone with a disability, or anyone caring for someone with a disability, to self-manage their care.
Along with wanting to give everyone the power to choose the right providers, services and equipment to help them, we want to provide other useful tools for everyday life.
As parents of a daughter with a disability, one area we were passionate about was helping people to choose their own outfits. Our virtual wardrobe feature lets you create a visual of the outfits you like to wear.
You can share it with family or support workers to help them select clothes you or your family member feel comfortable wearing. It’s an invaluable tool to educate support workers about clothing preferences.
How to use the wardrobe tool
Whether you want to share the clothing you like for work, school or a special occasion, it’s easy with Ability8.
All you need to do to get started is to take a photo of each item of clothing and save them in the virtual wardrobe. You can then mix and match pieces to create a range of outfits.
You can even add accessories to help make it easier for your support group to choose an outfit you love. You can create a lookbook of your favourite outfits so your support team knows what you like to wear.
Another feature is approving new purchases before your friends or family buy them. They can send you photos while out shopping, so you can decide if they're right for you before they buy.
Why choosing your outfit matters
Choosing an outfit is quite often overlooked for people with a disability. Usually, a family member or a disability support worker decides what a PWD wears without considering their preference.
The reason for the outfit choice might be practical. For example, a support worker might select an outfit that’s easy to wear. Or an option that’s quick to put on. If you or your loved one is non-verbal, sometimes a support worker may choose for them without even considering what they like.
A wardrobe feature can help your support worker understand the clothes you or your loved one prefers to make you feel comfortable. It can also help to convey your unique style and sense of fashion! And remove the stress of wearing an outfit you or your loved one don't like.
Finding clothing that’s functional and suitable can also be important for a PWD. For example, consider whether a button-up shirt or a zipper will cause any issues to the PWD. Having this information handy is another benefit of using the wardrobe feature within Ability8.
How we can help
At Ability8, we want everyone to wear something that reflects their sense of self and identity. Independence can help build confidence and make anyone feel more positive and fulfilled.
