Can I use NDIS to pay for Ability8?

There are many benefits of switching to self-managing your disability care - including saving money.

Did you know that with the savings you create, you can buy support to help better manage your disability care? Such as software applications, like Ability8.

How to Claim

There are a couple of different ways that you can use your NDIS funding to pay for the subscription costs of a self-management tool like Ability8.

Core Budget

Your core budget is used for everyday items and activities relating to your disability and help you work towards your goals. There are four categories within the Core Budget which include:

  • Consumables - everyday items

  • Daily activities - assistance with self-care (day or night)

  • Social and community participation - supporting you to enage in social or recreational activities

  • Transport - if you're unable to use public transport

This budget is flexible, so if you’re low on funds in one category, you can usually use them from another category. Just ensure your needs fit within the overall core budget classification.

When it comes to Ability8, most of our customers choose to claim under the Consumables category. This category covers everyday items you may need. For example, low-cost assistive technology or equipment that helps to improve your independence.

Capacity Building Budget

Your Capacity Building budget helps you build the skills you need to reach your plan goals. It doesn’t have the flexibility of the Core Budget, because you can’t move funds from one support category to another.

Customers who use the Capacity Building Budget choose the Improved Life Services category. This relates to helping to manage your plan, funding and paying for services.

Guidelines for Self-Management

Remember that the NDIS has strict guidelines to follow if you choose to self-manage. More information can be found on the NDIS website. You need to do the following (but you can still self-manage even if you need some help):

  • Buy supports that directly link to the goals in your NDIS plan

  • Have clear agreements with providers about supports you receive

  • Manage your funding so support is within your budget

  • Claim and pay for supports by submitting payment requests

  • Pay for your supports on time

  • Keep records of all your invoices and receipts

  • Meet employer obligations if employing staff direct

  • Demonstrate how you use your funding to reach goals at plan review

  • Let the NDIA know of any changes in your personal circumstances that can affect self-management

  • Provide documentation for auditing when required
